Objectives

Provide informational tools in the form of workshops for school communities on migration and solidarity issues.

Encourage dialogue among new generations regarding the migration phenomenon.

Promote and ensure sustainability and continuity of initiatives aimed at educating younger generations on migration.

The project draws inspiration from the tragic events of October 3, 2013 — one of the worst shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Lampedusa, where 368 migrants lost their lives — aiming to help younger generations reflect on migration issues.

The primary target includes school communities that, starting from events held in Lampedusa during the Memorial and Welcome Day, are invited throughout the year to participate in workshops, national and international awareness events, and to discuss these topics during curricular activities. The aim is to spread a culture of information, welcome, coexistence, and peace, based on respect for human rights.

The main goal is to provide knowledge about refugees, enabling students to develop an informed attitude toward migration and facilitating dialogue with refugee populations in Italy.

The initiative “L’Europa inizia a Lampedusa” is targeted at the 28 EU member states to raise awareness across the Union on this issue. The project is a learning opportunity, both formal and informal, on global interdependence and human rights, with a special focus on the rights of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in line with international and European humanitarian law principles.
