Fondazione Marevivo ETSObjectives
Reforest a portion of the seabed with 100 square meters of Posidonia oceanica.
Recover 100 large abandoned tires from the seabed near the reforestation area and initiate their recovery and/or recycling.
Involve students in environmental education workshops.
The shallow waters near the Italian coasts were once covered by extensive submerged meadows of Posidonia oceanica, an endemic Mediterranean plant. Today, it is a protected species, having become rare or almost entirely disappeared from the seabed due to human activities.
Posidonia meadows are crucial for maintaining biodiversity, ensuring high coastal ecosystem health, and protecting shorelines from erosion. Posidonia plays a vital role in oxygen production and carbon storage, as it sequesters over 50% of the carbon buried in marine sediments, double that of terrestrial forests.
The project can be divided into three phases: Regenerate, Recover, and Respect.
The first phase involves restoring Posidonia meadows in areas where they once thrived in the Gulf of Palermo by reforesting 100 square meters using an innovative anchoring module made from biodegradable materials.
The second phase focuses on the recovery and disposal of large tires illegally dumped in the sea, near the regeneration area.
The third phase involves setting up environmental education workshops at the Baia del Corallo facility, located within the Marine Protected Area of Capo Gallo – Isola delle Femmine (Palermo), recently entrusted to Fondazione Marevivo by the Sicilian Region.
