Promote LGBTQIA+ film culture through a series of films and short films accompanied by thematic talks.
Support young talents by offering free workshops and a competition for short film production.
Ensure inclusivity and accessibility with reduced ticket prices, LIS interpreters, and accessible spaces.
Encourage cultural exchange by integrating cinema, literature, theater, and music into a multidisciplinary experience.
FR*CINEMA was born from the collaboration between Arcigay Roma and Cinema Troisi, a key cultural hub in the capital.
FR*CINEMA was a film festival dedicated to cultural reclamation and the promotion of LGBTQ+ culture, consisting of seven evenings from March to June 2024. The festival recorded four sold-out events and welcomed approximately 1,600 attendees. Each event featured the screening of a themed film (historical or recent, with limited distribution), preceded by a talk with esteemed cultural guests and a short film to promote emerging talent.
The second edition, made possible by funding from the 8×1000 of the Italian Buddhist Institute Soka Gakkai, aspires to be a more comprehensive project, structured as follows: an initial film series with a focus on literature/authorship in the talks, followed by a call for under-35 artists offering free workshops with professionals from the film and cultural sectors, along with a free-to-enter filmmaking competition for the production of a short film.
To the key concepts of cultural promotion and reclamation, an additional element is introduced: providing educational and professional opportunities for young talents. This approach emphasizes accessibility to content and resources, reflecting a broader commitment to inclusive practices and project spaces. Young artists and authors will be provided with spaces, resources, and content; under-35 participants will also have access to free or reduced tickets for the festival. Additionally, the call for artists’ jury will be composed primarily of under-35 film students, professionals, and activists.
The target audience includes all individuals interested in film and culture, particularly under-35s, beyond the LGBTQ+ community. LGBTQIA+ culture, especially through cinema, which is highly accessible and immediate, does not speak solely to the community but conveys a universal liberating message that unites people.
