Objectives

Decontaminating an area of approximately two hectares within the Aguzzano Regional Urban Park, which was turned into an illegal garbage dump.

Organizing an awareness-raising and information campaign so that, by decontaminating and creating a wood, the park can become a training laboratory for schools and citizens.

Organizing participative planning workshops in order to create an urban wood with 200 trees in the area to be decontaminated. Creating a 300-meter trail to make the area more accessible and enhance its ecological and landscape value.

Implementing a network including local associations, the municipality and the park authority.

On August 1, 2020 a forest fire developed on a surface of approximately 6.5 hectares in the eastern part of the Aguzzano Regional Urban Park, near the neighborhood of San Basilio. The fire — controlled by firefighters after many hours — brought to light a 2-hectare garbage dump mainly made of inert waste, construction waste, bulky urban waste, car tires. Citizens repeatedly expressed their concern about this situation and the possible public health repercussions, but without results. This created disaffection towards the park, which manifested itself as neglect and, at times, vandalism.

The project aims for the integral decontamination of the dump by removing the waste piles and bringing them to the waste disposal plant. Through a participative planning workshop with citizens, indigenous trees and shrubs will be planted to create an urban wood with a trail to grant accessibility to the public.

Thus a degraded area will be given back to citizens, transformed into a beautiful, clean, accessible place in harmony with nature, which can contribute to improving the psycho-physical well-being of the people who spend time there.
The creation of an urban wood with indigenous trees and shrubs will improve air and micro-climate quality by combating CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. Furthermore, several local organizations will be involved, which will strengthen the local network that takes care of collective spaces and ensure the management and maintenance of the area over time.
