Objectives

Educating elementary and middle school students and their teachers on the causes and actions for climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Engaging children and teenagers in the regeneration of a municipal area and the creation of the Karma Forest (biodiversity forest).

Publishing a Graphic Novel of climate best practices, created by and for children.

“Langhe a scuola: azioni e voci per il clima” operates in Cuneo, an area in Piedmont facing a unique water stress situation in Italy. This is due to the heavy water use by monocultures (hazelnuts) combined with scorching summers and low-snow winters.

The project aims to increase awareness among local children and teenagers, aligning with the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, which on August 28, 2023, approved General Comment No. 26 on children’s rights in relation to climate change (CRC/C/GC/26). This emphasizes the role of children as active participants in the fight against climate change.

The project seeks to enhance the understanding of climate change causes and actions for adaptation and mitigation, equipping students with the tools to make their voices heard.

To achieve this, the project will undertake various actions, including:

  • Climate change workshops using a free and open-source teacher kit, focusing on children’s rights related to climate change and public participation.
  • The regeneration of 2 hectares of municipal land by children and the creation of a publicly accessible biodiversity forest (Karma Forest).
  • A Graphic Novel of climate best practices created by children for children.
