Objectives

In the aftermath of the 2021 earthquake and the worsening of life conditions in the country, supporting a network of eight farming organizations including around 2,000 members who are doing practicing sustainable agriculture.

Contributing to environmental and biodiversity protection, livestock rearing and agricultural production.

Offering technical and financial support to strengthen the networking as well as advocacy activities with local authorities.

The historic Rio Declaration on Environment and Development of 1992 placed individuals at the center of the narration regarding sustainable development:

«Human beings are at the centre of concerns for sustainable development. They are entitled to a healthy and productive life in harmony with nature.. (…) The right to development must be fulfilled so as to equitably meet developmental and environmental needs of present and future generations. In order to achieve sustainable development, environmental protection shall constitute an integral part of the development process and cannot be considered in isolation from it».

This definition introduces a long-term vision that must be translated into constant practical action, starting from the areas in the world that are most affected by climate change consequences.

The project’s goal is to support farmers’ organizations in Haiti, which play a crucial and historic role within the country. The PLAIOD network — supported by Fondazione Fokal — has been practicing sustainable farming for several years. Thanks to this project, it will further develop and focus on the following:

  • expanding and completing its headquarters;
  • promoting women’s emancipation by organizing social and professional activities;
  • supporting youth social and cultural activities, as well as income-generating activities.

Since their creation within the Haitian social, political and economic context, farmers’ organizations have played an important role in defending farmers’ interests, especially in rural areas. Their responsibility as intermediaries between the State and the population is increasing due to deteriorating living conditions, exacerbating political crises and lack of respect for fundamental rights.

In August 2021, an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale struck three departments in Southern Haiti causing great losses. According to the report published by the Ministry for Planning and External Cooperation, there were 2,246 dead, 12,763 wounded and 329 missing. In this context, Fondazione Fokal works alongside local organizations and institutions to support struggling farmers’ families who were particularly affected by the earthquake.
