Objectives

Enhance the ecological status of marine-coastal ecosystems and marine biodiversity.

Engage and raise awareness among local fishermen about eco-sustainable fishing practices.

Initiate an educational pathway to teach younger generations the importance of protecting and conserving marine ecosystems.

Understanding that the marine environment is a resource to be protected and managed to ensure a future for both artisanal fishermen and the marine resources that provide their livelihood, the project aims to create and install removable underwater structures capable of quickly attracting numerous species of fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and gastropods.

These structures are solely for repopulation and conservation purposes, addressing the significant biodiversity threats in the Teramo area, primarily due to excessive fishing pressure.

The project aims to conserve and restore marine biodiversity while increasing the sea’s productivity sustainably. The future sustainability of small-scale artisanal fishing relies on a balance between the catch and the sea’s regenerative capacity. Effective underwater structures are one of the few viable solutions for creating submerged barriers that contribute to biodiversity conservation by providing:

  • Suitable substrates for coastal breeding species;
  • Shelter and protection for juvenile stages;
  • Suitable environments for the growth of various marine resources in the Central Adriatic.

Monitoring of the structures will be conducted with zero impact using zero-emission electric propulsion boats.

An educational pathway with local primary and secondary schools will also be initiated, involving children in monitoring the evolution of these structures colonized by countless marine creatures.
