The call aims to support education, training, and awareness-raising interventions on the topic of climate change to actively contribute to fight climate change through the implementation of the Paris Agreement, specifically focusing on the “Action for Climate Empowerment” (ACE) strand. The purpose of ACE is to empower all members of society to engage in climate action.

Specific objectives

  • Develop and implement climate education and training programs targeting specific groups such as youth, women, and local communities to enhance their understanding of climate issues and their capacity to take tangible actions to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
  • Strengthen communities’ capacity to develop and implement climate action plans by establishing knowledge exchange networks and promoting public participation processes.
  • Foster public participation in decision-making on climate issues by establishing consultation mechanisms and involving civil society in the planning and implementation of climate action policies and programs.
  • Promote the knowledge, development,  utilization and deployment of low-carbon technologies and innovative solutions for climate change adaptation through public awareness and education, establishing knowledge exchange networks between the public and private sectors, and promoting public-private partnerships.

Climate change poses the greatest threat to sustainable development worldwide and its widespread and unprecedented impacts disproportionately affecting the poorest and most vulnerable populations. Taking urgent action to address climate change and its impacts is essential to achieving all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Paris Agreement builds upon the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), unitingall nations in a shared cause to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance the countries’ capacity to build resilience and adapt to the impacts of climate change, including by providing adequate support for countries in the Global South.

Within the UNFCCC, the ACE strand focuses on education, training, and awareness raising on climate change, with a particular emphasis on engaging underrepresented groups, especially youth, to  empower all members of society to engage in climate action.

In formulating the objectives of this Call, SGI-Italy took inspiration from Goals 4, 13, and 16 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs), with explicit reference to the educational, informational, and participatory aspects to which the ACE agenda is closely linked.

The Call for Proposals aims to support initiatives pursuing the objectives identified within the “Environment” area of intervention, which encompasses education for sustainable, equitable, and inclusive development, and the creation of a society capable of safeguarding the human rights of present and future generations.
