Objectives

Consolidating psycho-social support to children and minors, increasing their resilience.

Training local personnel so that they can promote child protection and peace-building approaches and tools.

Helping students design, implement and assess peace-building activities

Raise awareness among local community leaders and members on issues such as child protection, peace education and positive parenting.

The foreseen activities will take place in the Aleppo area and will focus on fundamental human rights protection for the whole Syrian population, paying particular attention to protecting children, women and people with disabilities. The project will include the following actions:

  • Offering psycho-social support services to 100 boys and girls to improve their resilience, non-violent communication and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Providing peace-building training to teachers and volunteers (focusing in particular on conflict resolution abilities, negotiation skills and child protection).
  • Fostering the creation of student clubs, with a view to developing a non-violent, collaborative and trusting environment among students and designing campaigns to promote education for peace.
  • Organizing awareness-raising sessions for at least 200 parents to help them become aware of their children’s problems.

Ten years after the beginning of the Syrian crisis,13.5 million people are in need for urgent humanitarian support. Years of conflicts and the consequent economic crisis have had serious repercussions on the physical and mental well-being of people and their resilience. In Syria, 69% of the population lives with less than two dollars a day, and it is estimated that one person out of five suffers from some form of disability (in most cases due to the ongoing conflict).

Child protection conditions are alarming: more than 5.9 million children and minors are in urgent need of various protection services. In 2021 on-going conflicts and attacks on schools disrupted children education. Teenage boys are always more likely to be killed or wounded, separated from family, detained, recruited or forced into child labor. Teenage girls are particularly at risk for child marriage, which puts an end to their education, harassment and other forms of gender-based violence, including sexual violence. Boys are also at risk for sexual violence, as are men, mainly in the context of detention.

Therefore the project’s strategy entails strengthening the protection of children and teenagers by increasing their resilience and getting parents, caregivers and school staff involved.
