Migration as a phenomenon is constantly increasing. According to the World Migration Report 2022, the estimated total of international migrants in 2020 was 281 million people, more than three times the 1970 estimates. In Europe the population of non-European migrants was more than 40 million in 2020. The main destination country is Germany, with almost 16 million migrants in 2020 (19% of its population). Italy has 6.4 million people who were born abroad and represents the sixth most popular destination for migrants in Europe in 2020. This phenomenon has always existed but it is growing as inequality, discrimination, and humanitarian and environmental crises increase.
